15 Minute Makeover

Posted by Beth On 1:44 PM 0 comments

I know I'd love one...:) And so would our city. Here is the info about the 2nd Annual 15 Minute Makeover on Thursday, 10:15am. Stroller Strides Flagstaff is a registered participant in this event and the moms & kids at Dara's Bushmaster Park class will take 15 minutes out of their workout to help clean up the park we love!

Here is more info off the City of Flagstaff's Website:

Participate in the 2nd Annual Flagstaff 15 Minute Makeover!

At 10:15 a.m. on Thurs 10/15, everyone will step outside and clean up where you live, work,
learn and play. That can be a school playground, ball field, front yard,
sidewalk, parking lot, etc. The goal of a 15 Minute Makeover is to encourage community pride. People who have the strongest community bonds feel the highest
obligation not to litter.
A clean city is a safe city.

How many of us have heard that from brides as they show us the bridesmaids dress they have picked out? I've been pretty lucky and although I still haven't worn any of my bridesmaid dresses again, I'm sure I could. For those of you that weren't so lucky- there's an answer! Someone else can wear it...like a needy high school student who can't afford a dress for the prom. The Soroptimist Club is collecting donated prom/bridesmaid type dresses for girls who can't afford a prom dress next spring. Girls from all the high schools will be invited to participate, based on referrals from their school counselors.

We will also accept shoes, purses, costume jewelry, shawls/stoles, or other accessories, and provide receipts for all donations. Our club runs "Hope's Closet" where we provide nice clothing to women for interviews and jobs, so any items left over will become part of the inventory there and available for women/girls who need them.

For more info on how to donate contact Diane Jarvis at the Soroptimist Club

And check out this website for more bad dresses...

Remembering Oscar

Posted by Beth On 8:00 AM 0 comments
Our first son Oscar Jameson died from an umbilical cord accident the night before he was born, September 23, 2007.

To celebrate the profound affect his short life had on ours, the Oscar Skinner Memorial Fund was set up.

In its first year last year, Jim and I were able to buy clothes, shoes, and a few toys for two little boys in need at Christmas, Isaiah and Joseph. Their families were thrilled, and otherwise wouldn't have been able to get the boys anything.

It was such a rewarding experience for us to meet them, and share our story - and somehow make a small difference. In the years to come, we hope to expand our efforts, helping more and more children at Christmas, in the name of Oscar.

September has become a poignant month for me- it is the start of one of my favorite seasons, but it is also a reminder that horrible things happen to great people.

Two years ago on September 23rd our close friends Jim & Lisa were eagerly anticipating the birth of their 1st son, Oscar. When they arrived, in labor & excited, to the hospital they were told that their precious baby, no longer had a heartbeat.

Last year, on the 1st anniversary of Oscar's death their friends decided to start the Oscar Skinner Memorial Fund in memory of Oscar. We all donated money to the fund with which Jim & Lisa could do whatever they wanted. They decided to spend the money buying Christmas gifts for a local family in need.

Tomorrow, on Oscar's 2nd birthday I will post a message from Lisa. I encourage you to read it, think of her & her family & donate whatever you can to the Memorial Fund. Remember every little bit counts.

Here is a link to donate through Paypal.

Please take the time to help turn this horrible event into a positive for local families.

Swap Out Your SIGG Bottle

Posted by Beth On 10:18 AM 0 comments

If you were like me & got fooled by SIGG's "no-BPA" bottle, take this opportunity to swap it out for a bottle that is really BPA-free!

The Soft Landing is sponsoring the "BIGG Bottle Swap", all you need to do is fill out their online form, wait for an email back from them with a mailing address and send them your SIGG bottle. In return you will get a coupon code for 30% off selected bottles purchased off The Soft Landing site.

Easy!

Huge thanks to The Soft Landing for doing this! By the way, this is a GREAT site for all "safe" baby products.

Also, SIGG seems to have succumbed to a bit of angry-customer pressure is offering a voluntary exchange program. You have to pay for shipping, but get a free replacement. A step in the right direction at least.
