Sad but true, one of my favorite stores here in town (and Stroller Strides Flagstaff partner) is going out of business Feb 7th. Head over there before then & take advantage of some great deals- 40% off all merchandise....
Stock up on cloth diapers, organic cotton clothes, cute! shoes & BPA free bottles/nipples. They also have a good supply of breastfeeding items, some great toys & books.

I really wish someone would buy the business & keep them here in town! I would if I could!!!

Mmmmm mud pies...

Posted by Beth On 5:31 PM 0 comments
As many of your Stroller Strides mama's know- Lily likes to eat off the floor, and out of other kids snack cups, and lick people, and kiss dogs & get kissed by dogs & refuses to keep her shoes on etc. etc. etc. - and my husband & I have always been of the frame of mind that its OK & maybe even good for her.. I think this stems from an old George Carlin routine about how kids from Jersey never got sick. So imagine my delight when "real"science backed up our thinking.... thank you science..

Two great ladies (both Stroller Strides alums) have recently started offering childcare out of their home. If you're looking- please contact them thru their emails here or email me & I can get you in touch with them.
Here are the details:

Stephanie (mommy to another Lily) who used to work at Zen Baby is welcoming children into her house on Smokerise- near the mall
Email for more info.

Carla (mommy to Ariah)
I will be taking full or part time, $125.00 a week or $25.00 a day, I already have a 2 month little girl so I will not be taking anymore tiny babies as of now, more toddlers probably. Our house is clean, organized, pet and smoke free. Also I will be very hands on with the kids when it comes to crafts and teaching, song, exercise, etc.. anything to wear them out, and keep them busy :) We live on the westside of town off Lake Mary, good neighborhood. Hours are 7:00 am to 5:30 pm. and no weekends. Breakfast, lunch, and snacks included.

Do you feel good Naked?

Posted by Beth On 8:54 AM 0 comments
I don't know if you ever saw the show called "How to Look Good Naked", I only saw it a few times while running at the gym, but it was great! Carson Kressley shows women how hot they actually are under their clothes- he looks at what women consider their 'problem' areas & show they that they really aren't that bad & how to dress them appropriately etc. Anyways, its a great show- check it out (I included a clip below).

My husband just forwarded me this link from Cnn.com about How to FEEL good Naked- and how, when women feel better about their bodies, they feel better about themselves and as a result, they are actually nicer people....pretty interesting.

What can you do to change the way you view yourself? Be kind to yourself, look at your body in the mirror and see all the beautiful things there, try something NEW, go & get fitted for a bra that will actually do its job (watch the clip below for more info). I don't know about you, but I want these body image issues to stop with me- I don't want Lily to ever have these problems- I want her to be a ridiculously secure, confident girl and woman and as we all know- that starts with ME.

LONG!
Ever since we went down to just MWF classes this winter- my Tues & Thurs mornings have become loooooooong..... Don't get my wrong, I love love love love love my daughter and at some point every day feel so lucky to be able to stay home with her, but I do not get what moms without Stroller Strides do from about 8:40- 11. I mean once that morning nap goes away you've got a lot of time to fill. Maybe it gets easier once they can color. I really think Lily misses her friends on non-Stroller Strides days- she is always excited to see (and lately, bite (sorry about that!)) the other babies in class.

I did sign Lily & I up for swim classes at the Aquaplex- $30 for 6 weeks- not bad at all. So come join us on Tues & Thurs 9-9:30am starting Feb 17th!

Luna Bar FDA Recall

Posted by Beth On 7:05 PM 0 comments
Dear LUNA Moms,

As many of you may have already heard, the FDA is investigating a Salmonella outbreak tied to peanut butter from the Peanut Corporation of America (PCA). PCA is a manufacturer and supplier of peanut butter for many food companies and manufacturers. For a limited time in 2008, we used PCA peanut butter in some of our products.

In light of this investigation, and with an abundance of caution, Clif Bar & Company has enacted a voluntary recall of 14 of our products containing peanut butter in the U.S., and 4 products containing peanut butter in Canada.

We are taking these steps because, as a food company, your safety is our top priority.

To check if the products you have are part of our voluntary recall please see the list below. If the product you have on hand is any of the products listed AND has a best by/sell by date that matches that on the list please call us to discuss the appropriate next steps to ensure no one mistakenly eats the product.

Please know that no other Clif Bar & Company products or flavors are included in this recall. As you know, we have many other products that you can safely enjoy.

If you have additional questions, please call (me/us).

For team members, organizations and clientele that you represent, please direct them to www.clifbar.com or Clif Bar & Company at 1-800-CLIFBAR (1-800-254-3227) for additional details.

Sincerely,

Sunny McKay

The majority of women that are diagnosed with breast cancer do not have an obvious genetic link- the Breast Cancer Fund's Pure Prevention campaign looks at other possible sources. This week we explore a possible link between pesticides and breast cancer risk. Educate yourself & take action!

2. Eat Smart www.pureprevention.org/act_eatsmart.php

Studies have found potential links between pesticides and breast cancer risk. Pesticides and other synthetic chemicals are found in our food. Read labels, ask your grocer to stock organic produce and hormone-free meats and dairy products, and look for organic food at your local farmers’ market. And when gardening or treating your lawn, look for natural alternatives to chemical weed and bug killers and take preventative measures such as mulching for weeds and using traps, barriers, fabric row covers, or plant-based repellants to get rid of pests.

The pesticides of greatest concern for breast cancer are used in the agricultural setting. To take a step further, visit the Pesticide Action Network website (www.panna.org) to clean up the environment beyond your home.

Fact: Did you know LUNA bars are made with 70% organic and 100% entirely natural ingredients?

American and South African researchers have found that people who combine aerobics and weight training for 16 weeks curbed their intake of calories, carbs, proteins and fats. The aerobics group reduced only their fat consumption, and the weights-only group saw no reductions. It is thought that combo workouts alter your metabolism in a way that makes you feel full sooner.

PURE PREVENTION
Pure Prevention is a campaign from the Breast Cancer Fund and LUNA Bar to raise awareness about the environmental causes of breast cancer and empower us to live actively, healthy and well. Pure Prevention focuses on 5 Tips for easy, everyday actions to help reduce the risk of breast cancer: Create a Healthy Home; Eat Smart; Choose Safe Cosmetics; Get Outside; and Join the Campaign to spread the word about prevention. Join the Pure Prevention Campaign and share this information with colleagues, friends and family at www.pureprevention.org.

1. Create a Healthy Home www.pureprevention.org/act_healthyhome.php

Make your home a chemical-free sanctuary. Many household items, including paper products and cleaning supplies, contain cancer-causing chemicals. These products can be replaced with safer, non-toxic alternatives available at your local supermarkets and health food stores. Plus, by making smart purchases you let manufacturers and retailers know that you won’t stand for toxic products.

Some plastics leach chemicals into the substances they touch, so you should try to choose non-plastic alternatives when possible.

o Avoid microwaving your food in plastic containers or in plastic wrap. Choose ceramic or glass containers instead.

o Swap plastic water bottles for stainless steel or aluminum options.

o Choose non-toxic baby toys and shower curtains instead of PVC (polyvinyl chloride), plastic or vinyl.

A Fit Woman

Posted by Beth On 6:38 PM 0 comments

I just got my favorite catalog- Title 9 sports- you've heard me blabber on about their sports bras in the past (they are the BEST)- and they have this t-shirt (ok, its a $39 t-shirt, so I probably won't be buying it, but still) called the "Fit Woman Tee" and I love what it says-

" A fit woman is fit for everything. The fitness of our body fuels the confidence in our souls. We are fit to toss our children in the air or throw caution to the wind. We are fit to stand on the sidelines cheering and we are fit to lace up our cleats and be cheered on. We are fit to run, we are fit to win. We are fit for everything"

(including...Fit for Motherhood....or Fit4Baby)

Fewer than 10 percent of breast cancers occur in women with a genetic predisposition to the disease. Even when all traditional risk factors—including genetic predisposition, reproductive history, diet, exercise and alcohol—are aggregated, more than half of U.S. breast cancer cases remain unexplained. The Breast Cancer Fund (BCF) believes that environmental exposures to toxic chemicals and radiation are increasing breast cancer risk. We need to get people talking about breast cancer prevention and reducing these environmental exposures. Visit and direct your friends to www.breastcancerfund.org to learn more and get people talking!

Luna Moms Club: Moms With a Misson

Posted by Beth On 1:06 PM 0 comments

The objective of this “Moms with a Mission” quarter is to educate ourselves about the environmental and other preventable causes of breast cancer.

On March 28th, 2009 the Flagstaff Luna Moms Club is hosting Lunafest at the Orpheum Theater. Lunafest is a festival of films by, for and about women. We will also host a silent auction with all the proceeds to benefit the Breast Cancer Fund AND a lucky, local charity.

About Breast Cancer Fund - In response to the public health crisis of breast cancer, the Breast Cancer Fund identifies – and advocates for elimination of – the environmental and other preventable causes of the disease. Founded in 1992, the Breast Cancer Fund works from the knowledge that breast cancer is not simply a personal tragedy, but a public health priority that demands action from all. www.breastcancerfund.org

Strength for Motherhood

Posted by Beth On 1:41 PM 0 comments

What does it mean to be a mother? I'm sure we could all answer this in different ways, but we would all come back to strength, love, compassion and a sense of humor. Could you imagine your reaction to getting peed on, puked on, pooped on, having your breasts leak all over the clean shirt you just put on etc. etc. etc. without having a sense of humor?
As women we have a built-in ability to simultaneously care for our kids, support our families, work a job, keep up the house, be there for our friends, our spouse and our communities.
We are all amazing women, amazing moms and amazing people. Whenever you are having an off day remember there are generations of women before you and draw on that strength.

We all have the strength for motherhood.

Oh My, enough with the diet talk!

Posted by Beth On 4:29 PM 0 comments
One of my least favorite things about the New Year is the glut of diet commercials on TV, in the Daily Sun & in my favorite respite from the 'real world', Us Weekly. The cover of this week's magazine is (of course) 2009's Diets That Work!, to quote a Weight Watcher's commercial, "diets don't work". We, the American people love diets, we love pills and ridiculous fitness fads- anyone remember inversion boots in the 80's? But, the sad fact of it is that "diets don't work"- remember the old standby "if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is". Unfortunately, the only thing that really works to lose weight, gain lean muscle, lose body fat etc. is good ole healthy eating & exercise both of which need consistency, willpower & motivation.

The good thing is- we can all become the person we want to be, the woman we want our daughters to be and the role model we need to be for our families and Stroller Strides is here to help!

A first step to many New Years Resolutions is to write it down, commit to it & then sign yourself up for some sort of program that will help you achieve it. If your resolution is to 'lose weight' or 'get fit' then go ahead & sign up for a Stroller Strides class, commit yourself to going at least 3 days per week. Want to learn how to change your eating habits? commit yourself to 8 hours of learning with our LEAN program. This can be the year where you really make those changes you want to see. YES! It will take a lot of work, but you WILL do it and can start to work on more interesting resolutions for 2010.

A clarification- LEAN, although an offshoot of the book LEAN Mommy, is not only for moms. It is a class open and beneficial to ANY woman- tell your friends & earn money off your class fee. This class is guaranteed to change your life- forever. I mean, we can't all go on the Biggest Loser.. :)
