Happy World Diabetes Day!

Posted by Beth On 3:01 PM
Today is World Diabetes Day.
I woke up to NPR this morning telling me that every 10 seconds someone dies as a result of diabetes and 2 people are diagnosed with the disease. Yikes!

Diabetes is the 4th deadliest disease around the world, and the disease can lead to renal failure and cardiovascular disease. 50% of people with diabetes will die as a result of cardiovascular distress and 10-20% of renal (kidney) failure- and this will happen 5-10 years earlier than the average population.

According to the International Diabetes Federation up to 80% of Type 2 diabetes is preventable by adopting a healthy lifestyle (everyone, say it with me "good nutrition and exercise").

My husband's uncle whose doctor told him he was on track to get Type 2 diabetes decided one day to change his life- he googled his disease and found a diet recommended by Dr.'s, consulted his Dr. and took the steps to start eating right, he started walking & working out- and when we saw him this summer not only did he look amazing but he was 1) off blood pressure meds 2) was told by his Dr. that he was no longer at risk for acuiring the disease. Now- this is just a story from my family- don't take my story as medical fact etc...
